I sympathize. I just bought my 12 yr old a tuba, sight unseen, from CA. He plays for concert and pep band. Trumpet for jazz at request of director. I am pleased he plays (and practices for hours on end). My youngest son, 10, just got his first trombone. The oldest son, 14, is eagerly waiting for a trip to the local music shop to select an intermediate sax after retiring the old clarinet he started with. If your child has a real interest, I hope you can foster it. Music is a beautiful thing.

Thanks, Monika. We did get him a trumpet a while ago, but I’m afraid it’s taken a backseat this summer to the ocean and Legos. Which he plays with separately, I should probably point out. Thanks for reading!

My boyfriend started out playing the trumpet and only played the tuba when the school needed a tuba player and owned the tuba for him to play. Way to encourage your kid on his musical interests! I played the flute for 6 years (private lessons & all) before I got bored and switched to voice. A trumpet is a much cheaper instrument (and he can practice his lip movements without attaching the trumpet to the mouthpiece – MUCH quieter) and much easier to sell if he decides to take his musical interests elsewhere.

I’m also a band director and I think it says a lot about your child’s music teacher that he wants to play the tuba. Obviously, he learned it at school and felt so inspired, he wants to play! You’re awesome for actually taking him at his word and getting him a trumpet. Please don’t listen to him in 3 months when he says he wants to quit. Young kids need a lot of parental encouragement to get through the learning curve. Play music for him by great trumpet players to keep him inspired. Your blog is hysterical, by the way.

Thanks for the link — we tried a baritone in the store, and the little man did seem impressed that he could hold it. And by the way, the band director gave you really solid advice. The baritone is fun and versatile and much easier to carry to and from school.
Kim from “Let Me Start By Saying” sent me. I am sure my kid will demand the most expensive instrument, play it for 2 months and then decide she is done forever. This is pretty hysterical.
